Advent Week 4: Love
Scripture Reading: John 3:16; 1 John 4:9-11; Romans 5:8; 1 Corinthians 13
Theme: Love in Christ, God’s Greatest Gift
The fourth and final week of Advent leads us to love—the foundation of Christ’s coming. Advent reminds us that Christmas is ultimately about God’s love for humanity, shown most perfectly in Jesus’ birth, life, death, and resurrection. In John 3:16, we see the depth of this love: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son.”
This love is reiterated by John in 1 John 4:9-11, as he writes, “In this the love of God was made manifest among us… if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” God’s love is not only a gift to be received but a call to action, challenging us to love others as Christ loves us. Paul reminds us in Romans 5:8 that “while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” This sacrificial love is what we are called to share with a hurting world.
1 Corinthians 13 famously describes love, teaching us that “love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” As we light the candle of love, let us remember that Jesus’ birth is an invitation to love as He loved—sacrificially, fully, and without condition. This week, reflect on how you can embody Christ’s love, reaching out to those in need, both near and far.
Join us in praying this week!
God of Love,
In this final week of Advent, we stand in awe of the depth of Your love for us. You sent Your only Son, Jesus, to dwell among us, to show us the way, and to die for our sins so that we might live. Your love is unending, unchanging, and perfect. Lord, fill our hearts with this love so that we may reflect it to others. Teach us to love selflessly, as You love us, and to be the hands and feet of Christ to those in need. As we approach the celebration of His birth, may we carry the light of Your love into the world.
In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
