We Work as Worship to the Lord
As we celebrate Labor Day in the United States and Canada during the first week of September, we take time to recognize the dignity and value of work. This holiday reminds us of the contributions of countless men and women whose efforts build, sustain, and bless our communities. But for followers of Christ, work is more than just a paycheck or a contribution to society—it is a calling from God and an opportunity to glorify Him. Here are four purposes for the work we put our hands to:
God’s Design for Work
From the very beginning, Scripture reveals that work is part of God’s design. In Genesis 2:15, we read:
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.”
Before sin entered the world, Adam was given meaningful work. Work was never meant to be a curse but rather a blessing—an expression of stewardship, creativity, and obedience to God. It is how we participate in His ongoing work in the world.
Work Done for the Lord
The apostle Paul reminds us in Colossians 3:23–24:
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”
This means that every task—whether large or small, visible or unseen—is an opportunity to serve God. Whether you’re teaching students, managing a business, raising children, or working with your hands, your labor becomes an act of worship when done with the right heart.
Rest and Renewal
Labor Day is also a reminder that God values rest. Just as He worked six days and rested on the seventh (Genesis 2:2–3), He calls us to rhythms of work and rest. Our rest honors God by acknowledging that He is the ultimate provider and sustainer. Jesus Himself invites us in Matthew 11:28:
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
True rest is found in Him.
Work With Eternal Purpose
Finally, our labor has eternal value when connected to God’s Kingdom. 1 Corinthians 15:58 encourages us:
“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.”
While earthly work can fade, what we do for Christ will endure forever.
A Word of Encouragement
This Labor Day, as you enjoy rest and time with family, pause to thank God for the work He has given you. Celebrate the talents and opportunities He has provided. And remember—when you dedicate your work to the Lord, you are not simply laboring for today, but investing in eternity.
