Advent Week 3: Joy
Scripture Reading: Luke 2:8-14; Nehemiah 8:10; John 15:11; Philippians 4:4-5
Theme: Joy in Christ, the Good News for All People
The third week of Advent, traditionally marked by the rose-colored candle, is one of joy. The joy of Advent is unique—grounded not in temporary circumstances but in the lasting reality of Jesus’ birth and the hope of His return. This joy has roots in the Old Testament, where Nehemiah tells the people, “The joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10). This joy, founded in God, provides strength to endure and rejoice, regardless of external situations.
In Luke’s Gospel, the shepherds are greeted by an angel proclaiming, “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people” (Luke 2:10). This announcement to humble shepherds highlights that Christ’s joy is for everyone, not limited to those who seem most “deserving.” Jesus Himself reinforces this joy, saying in John 15:11, “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”
Paul calls believers to rejoice, saying, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice” (Philippians 4:4-5). This is a joy that doesn’t depend on our situations but on the presence of Christ in our lives. As we light the candle of joy, let us celebrate the Good News that Jesus has come and will come again. This week, consider how you can live out this joy, becoming a beacon of gladness to those who may be struggling or feeling lost.
Our prayer this week:
Lord of Joy,
In this third week of Advent, we rejoice in the good news of Your coming. You are the source of true joy, a joy that transcends circumstances and fills us with strength. Like the shepherds who heard the angels proclaiming the birth of the Savior, we are amazed by the gift of Jesus. Help us to live in that joy each day, sharing it with those who need to hear of Your love and salvation. Lord, let our hearts overflow with gladness as we anticipate the celebration of Your birth and the hope of Your return.
We pray this in the joyful name of Jesus, Amen.
