Advent Week 2: Peace
Scripture Reading: Isaiah 11:1-10; John 14:27; Philippians 4:6-7; Ephesians 2:14-18
Theme: Peace through Christ, our Prince of Peace
The second week of Advent brings us to the theme of peace. Advent has long been a time of preparation and reflection, urging us to seek a heart of peace amidst the busyness of life. Peace, in the biblical sense, goes beyond the absence of conflict; it is a profound sense of wholeness and well-being, rooted in our relationship with God.
Isaiah prophesies about a future peace that will come through a ruler from the line of Jesse, saying, “The wolf shall dwell with the lamb… and a little child shall lead them” (Isaiah 11:6). This peace is not only external but internal—a transformation of our hearts and minds. Jesus Himself fulfilled this prophecy, and in John 14:27, He reassures His disciples: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.”
Paul’s words in Philippians 4:6-7 remind us that God’s peace is available to us now: “Do not be anxious about anything… and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” In Ephesians 2:14-18, Paul further explains that Jesus is our peace, reconciling us to God and breaking down the barriers between us and others.
As we light the second candle, representing peace, we are reminded that Christ’s peace transcends all human understanding. It is a peace that sustains us in trials and transforms our relationships. This week, reflect on areas in your life where you need God’s peace and consider how you might bring peace to others, sharing the gift of reconciliation that Jesus offers to all.
Join us in our prayer for week 2.
Prince of Peace,
We come to You in this second week of Advent, longing for the peace only You can give. Amid the chaos of our lives and the unrest in the world, we turn to You, the One who calms the storm. Let Your peace rule in our hearts, surpassing all understanding. Teach us to cast our anxieties upon You and to trust in Your steadfast love. Lord, make us instruments of Your peace, bringing reconciliation where there is division and comfort where there is sorrow. Fill us with the assurance that You are with us, guiding us toward the perfect peace of Your kingdom.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
